Snakes killed in Newmarket house fire

A house fire in Newmarket on Friday morning killed 16 snakes and sent one person to hospital as a precaution.

Of the 18 non-venomous snakes in the home, only two survived, Central York Fire Services told 680News.

There was nothing criminal about having so many snakes in the home, York Regional Police told CityNews.

Firefighters were called to the home on Cherrywood Drive, near Davis Drive and Yonge Street, around 5:30 a.m.

When they arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

Luckily, smoke alarms were working and everybody in the home was aware of the fire.

The cause is not yet known.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
