Study tracks accidents in 50 Canadian communities

TORONTO – A new study from Allstate Insurance has found that Sunday was the safest day to drive and overall the number of collisions has fallen over the past two years.

Of the 50 communities tracked in the study, Medicine Hat, Alta., has the lowest collision rate.

While Ontario has seven of the top 10 with the lowest collision rate most of those communities are in northern, southwestern and eastern Ontario. The closest one to the GTA was St. Catharines.

Nicole Watts from Allstate Canada tells me that the collision rate was higher on Thursdays and Fridays.

“We can assume perhaps those are heavy commuter days and perhaps those are days when there’s more socializing going on so you’re doing more on the road after work,” said Watts.

Provincially northern Ontario had the lowest collision rate and when it comes to the highest most of the communities are in the GTA.

“Some of the communities mentioned there Toronto at 5.8 percent, Maple at 6.10 percent, and Ottawa at 6.6, and while Ajax and Milton made the list as well.

The study also found Toronto and the GTA had the highest collision rates in Ontario.

Ontario is home to the top five Canadian communities with the largest increase in crashes including Milton, Georgetown, Hamilton and Kitchener.
