Gardiner repairs to lead to more closures

Drivers can expect major closures on the Gardiner Expressway over the next two years due to upcoming construction projects.

There are eight projects on the books and they won’t wrap up until late 2015. These projects are in addition to the repair and restoration projects already underway on and under the Expressway.

Steve Buckley, the general manager of transportation services department, told 680News several strategies will be used in order to minimize commuter chaos.

“There will be simultaneous contracts, so that rather then have three sections that are under construction for two years a piece, we may have three simultaneous problems running for just two years,” he explained.

The plan includes staggering lane closures, shifting the timing of construction on neighbouring roads and changing the traffic signals on the streets near the Gardiner if there’s a traffic jam.

According to Buckley, even with all that extra effort, there will still be slowdowns.

He says about 200,000 vehicles travel in each direction on the Gardiner every day.
