Man faces charges after taxi robbery, fatal hit-and-run in Scarborough

A man is dead following an alleged hit-and-run in the Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue area on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013.

TORONTO – Toronto police have charged a 24-year-old man following a taxi robbery and fatal hit-and-run in Scarborough early Sunday.

Police arrested a suspect after a taxi robbery at 675 Kennedy Rd., near Merrian Road, and a fatal hit-and-run on Kennedy Road near Eglinton Avenue.

Anthony Sowkey is facing several charges including robbery while armed with a firearm, impaired driving causing death and dangerous operation causing death.

According to police, a 22-year-old man was hit by a northbound pick-up truck on Kennedy Road near Eglinton Avenue at about 12:50 a.m. following the taxi robbery.

The pedestrian — who has not been identified — was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.

Police have located a pick-up truck in Vaughan and are working to determine whether it is the same vehicle involved.

Sowkey is expected to appear in court Monday.
