Woman on mobility scooter killed in collision with tractor-trailer

TORONTO – A 56-year-old woman riding a mobility scooter died in a collision with an tractor-trailer in the east-end Tuesday.

Toronto police were called to Carlaw Avenue and Gerrard Street East shortly after 10 a.m. after the scooter and a truck that was turning right onto Carlaw collided.

Police say the trailer’s rear wheels did mount a portion of the curb but that does not appear to have led to the accident.

The 42-year-old man driving the truck remained at the scene and was co-operating with police.

Chris, who works at a nearby auto shop, says he heard a loud scraping sound when he realized an accident occurred.

“It sounded like something was dragging. Then I heard everybody banging. I looked over and the truck was rolling back off of a scooter,” he told 680News.

“There were people banging on the truck telling him to back up. A few people ran over to the fire department, and the firemen came out.”

Firefighters performed CPR on the woman before paramedics arrived. Police say she was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witness accounts, it appears the scooter was rolling off the sidewalk and into the side of the truck, as the rig driver was attempting a right-hand turn from westbound Gerrard to northbound Coxwell.

The collision reconstruction unit is investigating.
