Toronto reverend faces additional sexual assault charges

Det.-Const. Teresa Curtis of the Sex Crimes Unit says seven more women have come forward alleging they were sexually assaulted by Toronto Reverend Ioan Pop.

TORONTO – A Toronto reverend, accused of sexual assault, is facing new charges, Toronto police say.

Ioan Pop, 54, now faces a total of eight sexual assault charges. He was arrested Sept. 11.

Pop was accused of sexually assaulting a female parishioner inside the All Saints Romanian Orthodox church at Birchmount Avenue and Danforth Road on Sept. 3.

A couple walked in during the alleged assault, according to police.

Since then, Det.-Const. Teresa Curtis said seven more alleged victims have come forward.

Police said the alleged assaults took place at the church or various locations in Toronto and Durham Region between 2005 and 2011 and involved female parishioners between the ages of 24 and 43.

“This is an ongoing investigation and I do believe that there are other victims,” Curtis said.

“We’re basically appealing to anybody who has information, that may have witnessed something as well as people who may have allegations themselves to come forward.”

Pop also faces one count of forcible confinement.
