Muslim women’s group gets federal funds to target domestic violence

The federal government has partnered with the Canadian Council of Muslim Women to address violence against women and young girls.

The council has received $306,040 from the Harper government
for a special two-year project.

Among those on hand for Thursday’s announcement in Brampton, Ont., was Dr. Kellie Leitch, the minister of labour and minister of status of women.

“Work on this national project will address various forms of violence against women and girls in their local communities, whether that be arranged marriages, violence committed in so-called honour killings,” Leitch said.

The money will help women and young girls across Canada.

The Canadian Council of Muslim Women, a non-profit organization, was established in 1982.
