City projects $58.5M 2013 budget surplus, could grow by end of year

TORONTO – It was back to work Tuesday for the city’s budget committee.

The city is projecting a $58.5-million budget surplus for this year.

But there are still some departments that are not on track to meet their budget.

Councillor Frank Di Giorgio, chair of the budget committee, presented a motion asking that they make sure they meet budget.

“Despite all the other pressures, I think the message is we have to work very hard to meet those objectives […] and that includes the reduction going into 2014,” he said.

“Everybody is to make efforts to meet their budgets for 2013. We’re relying on it.”

Di Giorgio says the Toronto Police Service budget and the Toronto Transit Commission have been over budget so far this year.
