Girl, 16, hides from burglar in Ajax home: Police

AJAX – Durham Regional Police say a 16-year-old girl hid in her bedroom closet while a burglar ransacked her Ajax home Monday.

Police say the teen was in her bedroom when she heard a knock at the door shortly before 11 a.m. She ignored it and then heard the sound of someone forcing their way into her home, police say.

She called 911 from her closet during the incident.

Police say officers who arrived on the scene found the suspect in the home in the Kingston Road West and Westney Road North area. The suspect fled on foot but was arrested a short distance away, police say.

The girl had no contact with the suspect and was not physically injured, police say.

Jermaine Chambers, 23, of Toronto, faces charges of breaking and entering, breaching probation, possession of stolen property, theft of a credit card, assault with intent to resist arrest and possession of marijuana.

Police say the accused also faces charges in connection to another residential break-and-enter in Ajax on the same day.
