Police investigate anti-Semitic graffiti in Vaughan

York regional police are investigating after graffiti was found spray-painted on four vehicles in Vaughan on Thursday.

Some of the graffiti was anti-Semitic, including a swastika, while other images were of genitalia, police said.

The vehicles were parked on Mountbatten Road, near Bathurst Street and New Westminster Drive. The hate crime unit is investigating.

“This cowardly and completely unacceptable act of vandalism will not be tolerated in our community,” Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said in a statement.

“Vaughan is committed to promoting tolerance and respect for everyone in our multicultural City. One of our great strengths is our diversity, and by taking an active and public role in combating racism and discrimination, we will continue to build a respectful, inclusive and safe community.”

The City of Vaughan passed an anti-graffiti bylaw in 2009. Under the bylaw, anyone convicted can face a fine ranging from $400 to $20,000. A second conviction can lead to fines of up to $50,000.

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
