Man charged with impaired driving in fatal Niagara Falls crash

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – Niagara Falls police have charged a man with impaired driving after a crash left a Quebec grandfather dead on Tuesday evening.

Police allege the driver was heading south on the Niagara Falls Parkway when three pedestrians began to cross the road near Murray Street around 10 p.m.

The driver allegedly struck the trio, leaving a 76-year-old man dead and sending two others to hospital.

The 76-year-old man and his wife, 75, were both from St. Donat, Que. They were on vacation with their 14-year-old grandson, who is from Montreal.

The grandfather was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife is in hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the grandson is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the crash.

Edward Coop, 55, faces several charges, including impaired operation causing death and having a blood-alcohol level over 80 milligrams causing death.
