Cooler temps, rain to benefit Niagara wine & honey harvest

It’s been quite the summer, with downpours causing flooding and temperatures that have ranged from scorching to downright chilly.

The rollercoaster weather has been especially stressful for wineries.

Good wine comes from good grapes — something that’s been a struggle this year with the onslaught of weather. However, there is a silver lining.

Krystina Roman of Rosewood Estates Winery told 680News the cooler weather is actually good news for wine lovers because the grapes should have plenty of acidity, which is beneficial for lots of reasons.

“They last longer in your cellar; they keep refreshing the palate — really just delicious wines,” Roman said.

So if it stays relatively dry, fans of the pinots and chardonnays will want to keep the Niagara 2013 vintage in mind.

The honey harvest is also expected to benefit from the rain, which is expected to be excellent this year.

The rain has made the Niagara Region especially lush and not dried out like last summer.
