Holyday defends Tories’ 1995 decision to cancel Eglinton subway

TORONTO – Etobicoke-Lakeshore Tory candidate Doug Holyday is defending the Mike Harris Conservative government’s decision to cancel the Eglinton subway in 1995.
Shovels were already in the ground when the newly-elected Conservative government pulled the plug on the Eglinton line.
Holyday says it was the only option.
“There was simply no money to do it,” he said. “We had bad Rae days. Remember that? We had to lay people off, people had to take unpaid time off work because we couldn’t balance the budget anywhere.”
But he does not see that happening with the newly-approved Scarborough line, even though the provincial money promise is $400-million shy of what the city wants.
“Over a period of time, this will pay for itself and it sets the standard that we want and the people in Scarborough want it. The Ford administration and I are supportive of that and so is Tim Hudak,” Holyday said.
Former TTC chair Adam Giambrone is running for the NDP in the Scarborough- Guildwood byelection. He says the original LRT plan was the better option because it is cheaper and would have been finished sooner.
