Dad charged after infant left in hot car in Oakville

Halton police have charged a man with child abandonment after an infant was left in a hot car in Oakville on Sunday morning.

Police say the man is the baby’s father but won’t be releasing his name to protect the identify of the child.

Officers were called to the Home Depot parking lot at 2555 Bristol Circle just after 10 a.m.

“The 9-month-old child was sweating profusely and crying, and from all accounts, had been left in the vehicle for 10 to 15 minutes while her father purchased food,” Halton police said in a release on Monday.

Home Depot made an emergency announcement inside the store after being alerted that a child was in distress, prompting citizens to rush outside, police say.

When the father got back to his vehicle, he was “berated by a group of angry individuals,” police said.

Paramedics assessed the child and later released the baby to his mother, who had rushed to the scene.

Police warned that leaving children unattended in a hot car during the summer’s extreme heat can result in serious injury or death.

Earlier this month, two-year-old Milton boy Maximus Huyskens died in a hot car, and in Edmonton, a three-year-old girl died after being found unconscious in a sweltering car.
