GO Transit expands Quiet Zone to all rush-hour trains

GO Transit will expand its Quiet Zone to all seven rush-hour trains after positive feedback from passengers on the Barrie line.

In the Barrie pilot project, riders on the top level of every coach were asked to keep their electronics muted and their conversation to a minimum.

The program was so popular, GO Transit said, it will be expanded the Quiet Zone to all rush-hour routes on July 15.

Rush hour covers all trains arriving at or departing Union Station before 9:30 a.m., and all trains departing or arriving at Union between 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

GO said that announcements will still be heard in the cars but all other noise will be brief.

“We and your fellow passengers in the Quiet Zone ask that any noise is kept low and brief for everyone’s comfort,” GO Transit said in a statement.

Short and quiet conversations are allowed, but electronics — including cellphones, tablets and laptops — must be muted, and no one else should be able to hear the music coming from your headphones.

“If you want to talk with your GO train friends or chat on your cellphone, the lower levels are available,” GO cautioned.

What do you think of the idea? Would you ride in the Quiet Zone?
