Metrolinx, TTC to debate plans to replace SRT

Metrolinx and the TTC are expected to meet Tuesday morning to discuss plans to replace the Scarborough RT.

Both agencies dispute the costs to convert the rapid transit line to a subway, with the TTC saying Metrolinx is “underestimating” the cost by about $1-billion.

The CBC reports Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig sent a memo to city manager Joe Pennachetti last week threatening to stop work on the $1.8-billion SRT changeover to LRT, unless the city reaffirms by Aug. 2 that it’s committed to the project.

The dispute started when council voted in favour of subways, contradicting a decision last fall reaffirming support for light rail.
