TTC to study King St. ban on cars during morning rush

TORONTO, Ont. – TTC officials have announced they are moving ahead with a plan to study a ban on cars on King St. during the morning rush.

Officials want to find out if a ban would enable streetcars to flow freely, but TTC Chair Karen Stintz told 680News, drivers don’t need to panic.

“We’re not taking any rash steps,” she said. “We know that there’s many implications if we take this measure, and we want to make sure that we understand the implications and we can minimize the impact.

“If the impacts are too great, then we won’t proceed.”

Meanwhile, TTC boss Andy Byford rode the King streetcar, Monday, to find out how riders feel about the idea, and told 680News, he found a lot of support.

“The overriding sentiment among riders I spoke to were that they were pleased to see that the TTC and the head of the TTC is overtly sticking up for their cause.”

The TTC voted unanimously in favour of asking the public works committee to study the streetcar-only idea, a request which the committee will consider at the September meeting.
