Pet food recalled over salmonella fears

An American pet food company has recalled several lots of its dry dog food after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found salmonella bacteria in a routine sample.

Nebraska-based Natura Pet Products said on Tuesday an “abundance of caution” had prompted the move and no animals or humans had become sick after eating or handling the food.

Here’s a list of the products, which were sold bagged in veterinary clinics, specialty pet stores and online in the United States and Canada:

  • Innova Dry dog and cat food and biscuits/bars/treats
  • EVO dry dog, cat and ferret food and biscuits/bars/treats
  • California Natural dry dog and cat foods and biscuits/bars/treats
  • Healthwise dry dog and cat foods
  • Karma dry dog foods
  • Mother Nature biscuits/bars/treats

Anyone who has bought these products, with an expiry date before June 10, 2014, should throw them out.

No canned wet food is part of the recall.

In humans, salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever. In rare cases, people can have arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite and stomach pain. Even without symptoms, infected pets can infect other animals and humans.

Infected humans should see a doctor, and pets with symptoms should be taken to a vet.
