Income tax filing due midnight Tuesday

The deadline for filing personal income tax returns for 2012 is midnight Tuesday.

For those who are self-employed or have spouses or partners who are self-employed, the deadline to file is June 15.

The rest have to get their T4 income paperwork, RRSP deduction slips, tax credits, and other items, all filed to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by midnight.

For those who don’t have any income, there are various credits that could be put on their return that are deferred for use in future years.

According to the CRA, most returns are filed electronically through e-file or professional tax prep services.

The average refund for those who already filed their return this year is around $1,500.

Meanwhile, a study by the Fraser Institute indicates the actual calculation of a tax bill costs around $24 billion to prepare, file, and remit payments for personal, business and property tax bills.
