Province reaches tentative deal with high-school teachers

Less than two months into her term as premier, Kathleen Wynne appears to be making some significant progress with the province’s high-school teachers.

This after it was announced the two sides reached a tentative deal Sunday night.

It appears the Wynne government was able to get the teachers to the table, after months of protest, rotating strikes and the withdrawal of extracurricular activities.

Education minister Liz Sandals says she thinks the relationship with teachers has been repaired, with an agreement to address concerns over maternity and sick-leave clauses in the current imposed contract.

Sandals made sure to point out that no new money was involved in getting the latest tentative agreement with teachers.

Union leaders will now ask the teachers if they will accept the deal.

Union leadership will meet on Thursday, before revealing details of the deal to teachers at a later date.

Few details have been released at this point, however other major concerns likely addressed in the contract include retirement gratuity, unpaid days and local bargaining.
