Peter MacKay and Nazanin Afshin-Jam welcome baby boy

Defence Minister Peter MacKay is a new father.

His wife, Nazanin Afshin-Jam, gave birth to a baby boy Monday.

The federal cabinet minister took to Twitter to announce the birth of their first child Kian Alexander MacKay.

MacKay and Afshin-Jam announced they were expecting a baby in September.

The couple married in Mexico in January 2012.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper extended his congratulations to MacKay and Afshin-Jam on Twitter.
