Four Peel police officers charged in off-duty altercation in Brampton

BRAMPTON, Ont. – Four Peel Regional Police officers are facing charges in a fight that left a 62-year-old man with a fractured nose as well as scrapes and bruises, police said Thursday.

Police said the officers were off duty when they allegedly got into an altercation with another patron at a Brampton banquet hall Nov. 30.

Police have charged Sgt. Bernard Webber, Const. Darren Barden and Const. Lance Kerec with assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement.

Staff Sgt. Doug Schulz is charged with being a party to assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement.

“I immediately launched an investigation into this serious allegation, which has resulted in these charges being laid,” said Police Chief Jennifer Evans.

“I am committed to maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in the Peel Regional Police.”

The officers have been suspended without pay since the incident came to light, police said.

They are due in court April 29.
