Clarington babysitter accused of sexually assaulting infant girl

CLARINGTON, Ont. – Durham Regional Police said a man sought in an alleged sexual assault on a baby girl in Clarington slashed himself several times with a knife when approached by officers.

Police said the parents of the infant, who is less than a year old, found her “injured from a possible sexual assault incident” after an evening with a babysitter Monday.

The infant was taken to a Toronto hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the babysitter was not arrested at the scene.

Officers tracked down the babysitter Tuesday while he was walking on Thickson Road North in nearby Whitby.

Police said that at the sight of an officer, the suspect pulled out a knife and slashed himself several times and required immediate medical attention.

Police arrested the suspect under the Mental Health Act and he was taken to hospital.

The 27-year-old Clarington man was later charged with aggravated sexual assault.

The infant is recovering in hospital.
