Ontario public high school teachers elect new union leader

TORONTO, Ont. – Ontario’s public high school teachers elected a new union leader on the weekend.

Paul Elliott, a teacher from Fort Frances High School, will replace Ken Coran as president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation beginning July 1, the union said Sunday.

The union, which represents 60,000 members and has been in a bitter labour dispute with the provincial government, elected Elliott and other members for various positions during its annual meeting at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto.

Elliott was first elected as provincial executive officer in 2005 and as vice-president in 2007, 2009 and 2011.

Frustrated by Bill 115, which imposed two-year teaching contracts, the union held rotating one-day strikes across the province in December and withheld extracurricular activities.

Coaching sports and running after-school clubs were only restored last month after both sides said they were making progress in their talks.
