Brampton man shot on CNE grounds dies in hospital

A man shot outside of nightclub on the CNE grounds on Feb. 10 has died in hospital, Toronto police tell CityNews.

Naveed Shahnawaz, 19, was shot after a fight started outside Muzik nightclub around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. Shahnawaz, who lived in Brampton, was one of two men shot.

The other, a 23-year-old, is expected to recover.

Police have three men in custody.

A third person, who wasn’t shot but was hurt in the fight, was also treated in hospital.

Right after the fight, a car allegedly fled.

The officers tried to stop the car, but when it continued on, they opened fire.

The car then crashed into a snowbank on Dufferin Street, near Liberty.

Bullets had struck two of the three people in the car, and they were taken to St. Michael’s Hospital.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the second shooting. The SIU is an arm’s length agency which investigates cases involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Tony Hoang Dinh, 18, is accused of two counts of attempted murder among a dozen other charges. Jonathan Kwok-Ho Lau, 19, is accused of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault with a weapon and breach of recognizance.

Hoan Nguyen, 26, is charged with assault.

Hoang Dinh will appear in court on Thursday.

CityNews has confirmed that Shahnawaz was an amateur boxer out of Bramalea. The YouTube video below shows him in the red in a bout.
