Leafs training camp to open Sunday in preparation for compressed NHL schedule

TORONTO, Ont. – NHL training camps are set to open Sunday after the players voted overwhelmingly to accept an agreement to end the 17-week hockey lockout.

The players ratified the latest CBA agreement Saturday, meaning the Leafs will be in action for the first time Saturday, January 19 against the Montreal Canadiens.

It will be a tough start for the Maple Leafs, who play 5-games over the first eight nights.

As usual, Saturday will be busy for the Leafs, who will play 14 times on that day. They’ll also play 13 times on Thursday, and have consecutive games on nine occasions.

After playing Montreal, the Leafs will open at home against the division-rival Buffalo Sabres on Monday, January 21, before heading to Pittsburgh for the Penguins’ home opener on Wednesday, January 23.

The NHL season will start with the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings hosting the Chicago Blackhawks on the afternoon of the 19th.

There are 13 games scheduled for that day, including five of the seven Canadian teams in action.

The lockout officially came to an end on Saturday, January 12, lasting a total of 119 days.
