Teachers’ union threatens action against teachers who ignore calls for job action

The union representing more than 76,000 elementary school teachers is reportedly threatening retaliatory action against any of its members who ignore calls for job action.

Any elementary-school teacher who does not go along with the union’s demand to withdraw extra-curricular activities could be subject to fines or public naming and shaming.

Tory education-critic Lisa MacLeod told the Toronto Sun she has a copy of an Elementary Teachers’ Federation letter that warns members to either go along with the job-action escalation or face fines of up to $500 a day.

They could also be subject to having their names put into some federation published materials.

This information comes as public high-school teachers announced they were to set to pull out of extracurricular activities and sports-coaching starting on Monday, December 10.

Union officials have promised to give at least 72-hours notice before any full-blown strike.

Teachers in the province are currently embroiled in a dispute with the government over their contracts, with some of the provincial proposals threatening the teachers’ right to strike.
