Province approves deals between six school boards and high school teachers

Ontario’s Liberal government has approved deals between six school boards and their high school teachers – including the one for York Region, while Durham Region’s teacher wait to hear if the province will approve their agreement, Friday.

Education Minister Laurel Broten said any tentative deals must be “substantially identical” to the one it struck with English Catholic teachers back in July.

In addition to the deal in York Region, there have also been approved settlements with the Upper Grand School District, Thames Valley, Avon Maitland, District of Niagara, and Hamilton-Wentworth District school boards.

The Ottawa-Carleton District also continues to wait to see if its tentative agreement is accepted.

Meanwhile, more Ontario elementary teachers are beginning strike action.

About 5,000 teachers in York Region – the first to take strike action this past Monday – have since been joined by 134 teachers at the Rainy River District School Board.

Teachers in two boards – the Trillium Lakelands District School Board and Kawartha Pine Ridge – are expected to begin work-to-rule on Monday.
