City council wrapping up early Halloween night

Toronto city councillors are taking off early Wednesday afternoon.

They’ll be leaving work early to enjoy Halloween but not everybody is happy about it.

Councillor Karen Stintz said Halloween is about the kids and the community so leaving a couple of hours early shouldn’t be a big deal.

Councillor David Shiner said it sets a scary precedent.

“I think it’s inappropriate to do that. Unless you’re prepared to do it for all the other members and for all the other staff of the City of Toronto that are in the same situation,” Shiner said.

What Stintz expected would have been a quick housekeeping issue ended up triggering more than 20 minutes of debate… but Councillor Doug Ford brought it to a close.

“This is absolutely ridiculous,” Ford said. “We have six speakers. Let’s just vote. We’re either leaving or we’re staying.”

The end result is that Wednesday’s meeting will end at 4:30 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. and start up again at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
