Accused Eaton Centre shooter gets one-year sentence for sexual assault

TORONTO, Ont. – A 23-year-old man accused in the fatal shooting at the Eaton Centre was sentenced to one year in jail for an unrelated sexual assault.

Christopher Husbands was also handed two years of probation for the November 2010 sexual assault.

The incident occurred at the apartment of a woman in her 20s who was known to Husbands.

According to a Toronto Star report, the Crown sought a maximum sentence of 18 months in jail and three years of probation. Husbands’ defence lawyer asked the court for six months in jail and two to three years probation.

Husbands was on bail and under house arrest for the sexual assault during his suspected involvement with the Eaton Centre shooting.

He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting in the Eaton Centre food court in June.
