Feds spending big to crack down on cyber threats

OTTAWA, Ont. — The federal government is spending big money to crack down on cyber threats.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews announced on Wednesday, $155 million will be spent over five years to make sure government information technology systems are hacker-free.

Toews said this money will help keep the people’s particulars under wraps.

“By securing our government cyber systems, we can better protect the private information of Canadians and Canadian businesses,” he said.

Toews would not name China’s Huawei Technologies or the Chinese government as a cyber threat.

“I’m not going to add fuel to the fire on this kind of stuff, it does not serve any purpose,” Toews said. “What I can assure you is the government of Canada is very concerned about cyber security.”

He says Canada is aware of where cyber threats come from, but sees no need to start naming other countries, as the United States and others have done.
