Canadian scientist creates mosquito trap to kill West Nile Virus

TORONTO, Ont. – A Canadian scientist claims he has helped create a mosquito trap which can kill 90 per cent of mosquitoes with West Nile Virus in just a few months.

Gerardo Ulibarri, a professor at Laurentian University, tells thestar.com properties in Northern Ontario which used the trap for five years have no signs of mosquitoes.

Each trap fits in a five-gallon bucket and uses a certain type of plant material which naturally decomposes which is designed to attract female mosquitoes to lay eggs.

The hope is to have the trap available in Canada by 2013.

The device is a result of six years of research in both Canada and Guatemala.
