Toronto police warns of distraction thefts targeting seniors

TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police are warning seniors after a recent rash of what they call distraction thefts.

The thefts have been especially prevalent in the city’s northwest end in 31 division, which is an area bordered by Lawrence Avenue West, Caledonia Road, Steeles Steeles Avenue West and Weston Road.

Police said people are approached at their homes and offered gold as a gift or for sale by someone who says it’s from a family member that just passed away.

They put the necklace or ring on the victim to try on, and then a second suspect takes their other jewellery.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at 416-808-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.222tips.com.
