Deadly tornado in Goderich remembered one year later

One year ago a deadly tornado levelled the historic downtown area in Goderich.

It is still considered to be the most powerful tornado to hit this province in years.

“It was just devastation. All the buildings were gone and there was no trees, nothing. It was just incredible.”

One man was killed and three dozen were injured.

The F-3 tornado packing winds of up to 300 kilometres an hour. The Environment Canada rating made it the most powerful storm to strike Ontario since 1996.

Several buildings had their roofs ripped off, numerous windows were shattered and a number of cars were tossed around. The downtown area, which has classic historic buildings, was declared a “no-go” zone because of the severity of the damage.

58-year-old Beth Ross and her husband have since rebuilt their home that was destroyed but she says the fear remains.

“I know that people still get anxious in a big thunderstorm.”

About 90 per cent of the businesses affected by this monster storm have reopened.

The local business association said they have even seen a boost from so called “tornado tourists.”
