CAW, Detroit 3 automakers begin contract talks

TORONTO, Ont. – The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Union and the big three automakers – Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler – began contract talks Tuesday after autoworkers made many concessions during the recession to keep the companies afloat.

CAW President Ken Lewenza said the industry has come a long way since the recession and it is now time for the companies to recognize the sacrifices made by workers.

“We have to find a way to share in the successes that our members have built over many years.”  Lewenza said. “Highly profitable companies have no ethical or economic right to demand more concessions.”

Lewenza said both Ford and General Motors are now profitable and Chrysler has bounced back faster than anyone thought.

CAW has set a deadline of Midnight September 16 for negotiations. The Union is to meet with Chrysler Tuesday afternoon and Ford Wednesday.
