LCBO posts record beer and wine sales

TORONTO, Ont. – Cheers to the LCBO!

So far it has been a record year for beer and wine sales right across the province.  The record sales make this the most successful year in LCBO history.

Thirsty Ontarians bought up $4.7-billion worth of beer, wine and spirits at the LCBO. That number is up nearly 5 per cent over last year.

The biggest spike in sales was among Ontario craft beer, which is up 45 per cent.

Some customers at the Queen’s Quay LCBO told 680News their theories on this craft beer craving.

“You see a lot more options now than you saw even five years ago so you see all the guys in Muskoka doing stuff, you see the guys in Creemore doing stuff, you see the guys at Eastern Ontario doing stuff,” said one man.

Eric told 680News word of mouth keep him up on Ontario brew.

“Friends of mine were talking more about it too. Did you try this and did you try that? They just keep making better beers.”

Another man said it was all about quality.

“People will pay more, it usually is more money, if they know they’re getting quality instead of watered down, factory  beer.”

Ontario wines also have a growing fan base, with sales up nine per cent, reaching almost $106-million.

On Friday the LCBO announced that it will embark upon its largest store expansion in history, opening approximately 70 new stores over the next two years. This will add almost 20,000 linear feet of Ontario wine shelf space in its stores.
