Councillor reignites debate for relaxed fireworks law

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You may soon have more opportunities to buy fireworks in Vancouver. A city councillor wants to see them made available for celebrations beyond Halloween.

Raymond Louie says lots of people would like to have fireworks for events like New Year’s, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Canada Day, or BC Day.

“Allowing our citizens to enjoy and celebrate the festivals and their heritage that make up our multicultural city that we have.”

Louie says the city already has an effective permitting process to manage fireworks around Halloween, but doesn’t think that run-up is enough.

He says the same rules could be applied at other times of year, and he’s asking for council’s support to have staff examine the options.
