Fire destroys million-dollar waterfront home in Pickering

A million-dollar waterfront home in Pickering was completely destroyed Saturday evening, after authorities believe a fire started in a back-porch barbecue.

A 21-year-old house-sitter was reportedly the only one home, and was looking after the residence for his father’s boss when the blaze began.

Neighbours said the young man was devastated after the fire.

“It was terrible. It was just engulfed in flames. The whole house was just demolished,” a neighbour said.

“You could hear the windows blowing out from the intensity.”

The fire, at a home on Front Road near Liverpool Road, began around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, and at 11 p.m. fire crews were still working to douse the last of the flames.

The owner of the home is believed to be away for a conference. Neighbours told CityNews the home owner was a prominent dentist, calling the residence a “dream home.”

No one was injured but the fire caused approximately $1 million in damage.

Police are investigating but say there appears to be no foul play involved.
