B.C. police lay charge in 300 km/h hair-raising motorcycle ride put on YouTube

SAANICH, – A British Columbia man has been charged in a hair-raising motorcycle ride along a Vancouver Island highway that reached speeds of 300 kilometres an hour.
Video showing the driver swerving in and out of traffic was uploaded anonymously to YouTube and has been viewed more than 750,000 times since it was posted in April.
A charge of dangerous driving has now been sworn against 25-year-old Randy George Scott of Victoria.
Sannich Police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the suspect was tracked down as a result of tips generated by publicity over the incident.
“Rather than just one, we got several. In fact, we had many, many people phone us,” Jantzen said.
Officers selected the three best witnesses as the basis of their report to Crown counsel.
“It’s been a lot of work,” Jantzen said.
The adrenaline-charged video shows the perspective of an unidentified driver, who weaves between cars and trucks as the speedometer needle climbs.
Police have a warrant out for Scott, who officers have failed to locate.
Jantzen said Scott has contacts in Victoria, Kelowna and Edmonton.
“We have some ideas, we’ve done some door-knocking and we just haven’t quite caught up to him yet,” he said.
The bike itself is owned by an Esquimalt woman who was charged earlier, although Jantzen said she was never believed to be the rider in the video.
“We did take action believing that we … couldn’t prove who the rider was at the time,” Jantzen said. “It might change the outcome as far as the Motor Vehicle Act charges against the registered owner.”
