Poll: Merkel’s approval rating highest in 2 1/2 years, though many fear euro crisis will worsen

BERLIN – A new poll puts Chancellor Angela Merkel’s approval rating at its highest in 2 1/2 years amid general approval of her handling of the eurozone debt crisis, but says most Germans fear the crisis will worsen.

The ARD television poll of 1,004 people published Friday said 66 per cent were satisfied with Merkel’s work — eight points higher than a month earlier and the best since December 2009. It found that 58 per cent believed she had taken the right action in the eurozone crisis but 85 per cent believe the worst is still to come.

The poll gave a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 points. It was conducted between Monday and Wednesday — after a European Union summit last week at which Merkel made concessions to Italy and Spain.
