Father’s Day on Sunday; suggestions for dad’s special day

TORONTO, Ont. – Father’s Day is on Sunday — it’s a time to honour fathers and their special role in society.

While it is not a statutory holiday, in Canadian custom families usually spend time together and gifts are often given to dad.

As such, the TTC and GO Transit will be open to help you get around, should you want to take dad out for a day on the town.

Some possible events for dad are highlighted below:

The Safeway Father’s Day Walk/Run – This annual event is a walk/run at Ashbridges Bay Park. Proceeds from the run go to research, awareness and fundraising for prostate cancer. There is also a walk/run event in Scarborough at Morningside Park and in Peel at Chinguacousy Park.

Father’s Day at Black Creek Pioneer Village – There will be a BBQ rib lunch, battle of black creek re-enactment and historic brewery tours.

Father’s Day Brunch at Casa Loma – Casa Loma will be holding a royal Father’s Day brunch to go along with their self-guided tour of the castle.

Luminato – While not specifically for Father’s Day, the Luminato festival will be operating on the weekend and offers many things for the artistic dad.

Father’s Day Brunch Cruise – How about taking your dad out for brunch on a boat? Mariposa Cruises offer a two-hour brunch aboard the Mariposa Belle.

Father’s Day Dinner Cruise – How about taking your dad out for dinner on a boat? Mariposa Cruises offers a lengthy dinner cruise.

Father’s Day Sweets Tour – A tour through Kensington Market complete with samples of sweets from the area.

Taste of Little Italy – If your dad is a big food fan, also on Father’s Day weekend will be the Taste of Little Italy festival.

Beach BBQ & Brews Festival – Complete with live music, the beach, barbecue and brews festival is taking place at Woodbine Park.

If taking dad out isn’t in your plans, below are some popular gift suggestions and strategies for selecting the right gift.

Remember, not all fathers are the same, and depending on what your dad is into, you’ll have to tailor your gift. Over at Gifts.com, they have gift suggestions for every type of dad, ranging from the “new dad to intellectual dad to foodie dad to athletic dad.”

While the intellectual dad might appreciate something like a pocket-book or E-Reader, the athletic dad may prefer a new golf shirt or Nike GPS watch.

For the foodie dad, how about a smoker box to add to his barbecue collection or a set of specialty hot sauces.

So if you still are short for ideas on what to get dad, his favourite beverage, music or movie can always be nice, while a hand-made card can show effort and thought.
