City council votes to continue funding Riverdale Farm

Saved from the brink, Riverdale Farms has been given a new lease on life.

The farm had been nearing the end of the line because of city funding cuts

Several months ago Riverdale Farms was told to come back to City Hall with a plan, and they did

“One driven by a new governance structure and a funding model that does not solely rely on city resources for its future success,” explained Riverdale Farm Coalition member Anne Pastuszak

The plan consists of a multi-tiered effort, including trying to find corporate sponsorship, getting donations from the public, and charging a membership fee.

Councillor Michael Thompson said the city has a responsibility to keep the farm running.

“I think it’s really important for us to stand strongly with the community and to ensure that we demonstrate the sense of good will and the desire to not only address the issue as it relates to financial prudence but also as it relates the essence as to who we are as a city,” said Thompson.

Toronto City Council voted Tuesday to continue its half-million dollars of funding for the site.
