Canadian students shouldn’t drop math and science after grade 10: report

TORONTO, Ont.,- A learning report from the “Spotlight on Science” states that Canadian students should not be allowed to drop math and science classes after completing grade 10.

The report said not making math and science compulsory through high school has an impact on what kids study in college and university, including what career path they decide to take.

A survey from the Toronto Sun supports that finding.

The survey discovered 78 per cent of 12-year-olds said they were interested in science, but that percentage dropped to 58 per cent when the same question was asked to 18-year-olds.

In Ontario, students must take science up until the end of grade 10, at which point they can drop the subject and pursue other courses.

Students must take math until the end of grade 11, however.

Many universities and colleges require more advanced grade 11 and 12 math courses for admission, however.
