Preliminary hearing continues Tuesday for teen charged in Const. Garrett Styles’ death

The preliminary hearing for the teen charged with first-degree murder in the death of York Regional Police Const. Garrett Styles continues in Newmarket, Ont., Tuesday.

The hearing started on Monday.

Const. Styles, 32, was killed during a routine traffic stop in June 2011.

Authorities allege the boy, who was driving a minivan, dragged and pinned Styles under the vehicle. The officer later died in hospital.

The teen, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was 15 years old at the time of Styles’ death. He is 16 years old now.

“He is quadriplegic and these are devastating injuries to him. He’s not doing all that well,” the lawyer told CityNews, Monday.

The lawyer also said his client who is in a wheelchair will not be required to sit through the entire hearing, which is expected to conclude at the end of June.
