Head custodian at Toronto Catholic school charged with attempted murder

TORONTO, Ont. – The head custodian at an all girls Catholic high school is facing several charges including attempted murder after a gas leak.

Police say on May 31 they were called to St. Joseph’s College School, located at 74 Wellesley Street West, shortly before 8 a.m. for a gas leak.

It is alleged that 67-year-old Vincent Perna entered the building and cut a gas pipe, then entered the kitchen area at the school and assisted kitchen staff in lighting the stove.

Police say the smell of gas had caused staff to evacuate the students from the school.

There were no injuries.

Perna also faces charges of attempted arson, break and enter with intent and mischief.
