Calls for crisis meeting of UN Security Council after Syria massacre

Britain is calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, after a massacre in the embattled country of Syria left at least 90 people dead.

A new round of international condemnation followed the killings in the Village of Houla, which saw at least 32 children under the age of 10 murdered.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird was among those blasting the slaying of at least 90 people, saying Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is showing, “utter contempt for humanity and decency.”

Major General Robert Mood, head of the United Nations’ observer team inside Syria, says the assault on Houla has been confirmed by observers he deployed to the area.

“They were able to confirm with their own eyes the death of 32 children under the age of ten years old,’ Mood said.

The Syrian government has blamed rebels and “terrorists” for the slaughter, while opposition forces say members of Assad’s militia were behind the killings.

The European Union, Arab League, France, Britain and Germany are all among those calling for an intensification of pressure or sanctions on the Assad government.
