POM Wonderful using deceptive advertising, U.S. judge rules

A U.S. judge says beverage brand POM Wonderful has employed deceptive advertising with its claims that pomegranate juice could treat or prevent heart disease, prostate cancer and other illnesses.

In the ruling, Chief Administrative Law Judge Michael Chappell took the side of U.S. regulators, and ordered POM to immediately stop all claims of health benefits or performance enhancement for its beverage.

Expert witnesses told the court that pomegranate juice has not been proven to treat or prevent any of the diseases the company mentions in its advertising campaign.

POM Wonderful is blamed for being responsible for starting the pomegranate craze, which has spread to everything from smoothies to salad dressings.
