Labour Minister issues statement on looming C-P Rail strike

OTTAWA, Ont. – The threat of a strike at C-P Rail has got the Harper government’s attention.
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt has issued a statement expressing concern about the strike notice issued by the union representing five-thousand C-P employees.
The two sides are still talking, but the workers can legally walk off the job first thing Wednesday morning.
C-P has warned that a strike by its locomotive engineers, rail traffic controllers, conductors, trainmen and yardmen would shut down its Canadian operations.
Raitt says she hopes the two sides can cut a deal without a work stoppage.
The minister has used a legislative hammer to block work stoppages at Air Canada and Canada Post — infuriating labour groups.
But she hasn’t indicated yet whether she’s prepared to do it again to keep C-P trains rolling.
