Police chief appoints retired judge and attorney to handle cases against officers

TORONTO, Ont. – Chief Bill Blair is promising to prosecute his officers for misconduct, allegedly committed during the G20 two years ago.

Blair is appointing a retired judge and a former crown attorney to prosecute the cases of unlawful arrest and excessive use of force allegeldy committed by his officers during G20.

In a written statement, he said given the extraordinary public interest the cases, they need to be handled independantly.

The disciplinary hearings will be conducted in public and the results made public.

Blair said as the chief of police, he accepts responsibility for the actions of his officers and is promising to holding officers of any rank accountable for misconduct.

He also said he is committed to restoring the confidence of the people of Toronto.

At the same time, he says the vast majority of police officers conducted themselves professionally and that, generally, policing of the events at the G20 summit was done well.
