29 Toronto police officers face charges related to G20 summit

TORONTO, Ont. – Twenty-nine Toronto police officers are facing misconduct charges relating to the G20 summit in 2010, Toronto Police Association president Mike McCormack has confirmed to 680News.

The charges are under the Police Services Act, which means they are not criminal but an internal form of discipline.

If convicted, the officers face punishment ranging from suspensions, lost pay, even firing.

The charges range from incivility to excessive force with the punishment ranging from suspension to firing.

This comes after a scathing report released Wednesday slammed the Toronto police for their actions in the G20 summit. Police Chief Bill Blair said the report was just an opinion and not fact, but did say an inquiry would be held.

Meanwhile, Ontario Federation of Labour president Sid Ryan is calling for Chief Blair’s resignation.

McCormack said 29 is not a large number given the hundreds of officers responsible for policing the summit.

He also said a key part of the g20 wknd appears to have been ignored.

“Let’s not forget the people who came to Toronto who runied our stores, who broke into our businesses, who lit police cars on fire,” said. “That seems to be getting lost in the dissection of officers.”

The allegations still have to go through a hearing process.
